Input Media had two major roles to play at this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia – the first was to produce the extended World feed (EBIF), and the second was to provide the infotainment service for big screens within all stadia.
It was our second World Cup in succession providing such services, but this time it was different. In 2014, we’d had teams dotted around the various stadia in Brazil, but this time around HBS and FIFA came up with remote solutions, ensuring the entire Input Media crew were based at the IBC in Moscow.
Finding the right crew for the challenge was the first task, amongst them sound operators, EVS ops, voiceover artists, directors and many more. We had two World Feed crews in the IBC, one team remaining until the Final, with our first crew departing just before England at the Quarter Final stage. Both teams produced at least one programme a day, sometimes two, with each broadcast around three hours in length.
Our three infotainment crews followed a similar schedule, and were charged with the not-too-easy task of transmitting VAR decisions to those in the stadium; a first for football.
All in all, we had over 30 staff in the Russian capital, each service producing over 200 hours of EBIF programming viewed by hundreds of millions of people around the world and thousands in the stadia – all delivered from a single location in Moscow.
